Stop the FCC Takeover of the Internet

Last month, the Federal Communication Commission published their Net Neutrality rules. These rules, which are scheduled to take effect on November 20, 2011, place needless and costly regulation over Internet Service Providers. However, the most concerning things about these new rules is that they originate in a federal bureaucracy, the FCC, and not with congress – where they should originate.

The FCC was established to oversee the laws that govern communicationsas dictated by congress. In this case, though, the FCC has taken it upon itself to dictate the rules the internet must abide by. On top of this, these rules will adversely affect both consumers and businesses in the United States.

ISPs will be unable to manage their networks and bandwidth hungry applications and websites, like BitTorrent, will slow down internet speeds for everyone. Additionally, these rules will force companies to detail how they manage their network. This might sound like a good idea, until you remember that the consumer can already tell when their internet is slow. The additional cost of detailing this information will be passed along to the consumer.

So, not only will these rules slow down the internet, they will also increase the cost as well. These rules would be unacceptable if they were dictated in congress. However, since they originate in the FCC, U.S. citizens who use the internet should be incensed. Sign the petition to stop the FCC from handing down these ridiculous and burdensome rules.
